He was not accepted by his family and felt very sad and lonely. When he saw swans flying around, he thought he could be like them and he tried to fly, but he couldn't because he was still ugly. When he saw a swan that looked just like him, he thought it was an illusion and that it really wasn't him. After falling all those times, it started to make him feel like a real duck and he became happy and proud of himself.
